Beach Rules

Currituck County Beaches
There are 125 communities located within Currituck County that have leash requirements.

Duck
Dogs are allowed on the beach without a leash as long as they are under the close supervision of their owner. The leash law requires that leashes do not exceed 10 feet in length.

Southern Shores
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 15 through September 15. From September 16 through May 15 all dogs must be on a leash, and all pet waste must be cleaned up on the beach.

Kitty Hawk
All dogs must be registered with the Town of Kitty Hawk and receive a town license. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are allowed on the beach from 6-9am and from 6-9pm. Dogs are allowed on the beach any time of the day for the remainder of the year. Dogs must be leashed, and the leash must not exceed 10 feet in length.

Kill Devil Hills
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 15 through September 15 unless they are aiding the handicapped. Dogs are allowed on the beach from September 16 through May 14 but must be leashed. There is no length requirement for the leash.

Nags Head
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach year round. Leashes must not exceed 10 feet in length.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Dogs are allowed on the beach year round if they are restrained with a leash 6 feet or less at all times. All pet waste must be properly disposed of by owners. Dogs are not allowed on designated swim beaches or in any buildings.
